During a recent earnings call, Paramount confirms that a new jackass series is currently in early development for its streaming platform.
A new jackass series is currently in development for Paramount+.
According to information pulled from a recent Paramount earning call, the jackass crew will return exclusively to the studio’s streaming service for a new show. “Based off the success of Jackass Forever, we’re working with the creators to continue the partnership with a new series, bringing even more ridiculous antics straight to Paramount+,” Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish told a post-earnings analyst call, according to THR. At the time of writing, nothing about the series beyond its existence is known but fans can expect more information in the coming months.
The jackass franchise is experiencing somewhat of a renaissance following an extended decade-long hiatus. Fans of the pain-loving group were treated to a fourth mainline film, titled jackass Forever, in early 2022 which saw the original cast, including Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O and Chris Pontius, introduce a new generation. While serving as a nostalgia trip for long-time fans, Forever also set up the future of the series by introducing a range of new cast members such as Eric Manaka, Jasper Dolphin, Rachel Wolfson and Zach Holmes amongst others.
jackass Forever was widely praised by both critics and fans of the series, with many hailing it as a necessary cathartic release after the stress of COVID-19. “Jackass has never been about conquering fears so much as simply putting on a blindfold and charging at them without any concern for what’s to come. And as long as there are people willing to do that on camera, Jackass will stay alive forever,” writes CBR’s Brandon Zachary.
Beyond the fourth film, Netflix announced that fans can expect to watch the highly-anticipated jackass 4.5 when it hits the streaming platform on May 20. The movie consists of segments, stunts and pranks which didn’t make it into Forever. The brief teaser included a particularly grueling challenge known simply as the “Swingset Gauntlet.” While jackass Forever is currently streaming on Paramount+, it’s currently unknown why 4.5 is exclusive to Netflix.
Speaking to the legacy of jackass, Steve-O and Pontius expressed how attitudes towards the entire franchise have shifted over the course of two decades. “It really genuinely went from, ‘Look at these assholes,’ and ‘What are they doing?’ to, ‘This is the movie that the world needs right now. Jackass is saving the day,'” said Steve-O. “People calling this a masterpiece is so funny. Thank you for the appreciation, the love, and the support. I think we’ve only had one barometer for our success and that is what we call the peanut gallery.”
