Nargis’ daughters Namrata, Priya remember her on death anniversary, shares how Dutt family fought cancer together

It’s been 41 years since the legendary actress Nargis succumbed to cancer on May 3, 1981. On the occasion, her daughters, Namrata Dutt and Priya Dutt remembered their mother. The actress’s eldest daughter, Namrata, also shared how Nargis and her family put up a strong fight against cancer.

DAD WAS WITH HER EVERY SINGLE DAY: NAMRATA DUTT

One of the most iconic couples of Indian cinema, Sunil Dutt and Nargis’ love story is nothing less than a Bollywood film. The love between them never faded, instead, it grew stronger with time. The couple got married in 1958 and soon welcomed three kids, Sanjay Dutt, Namrata Dutt and Priya Dutt. However, the Dutt family’s lives turned upside down when Nargis contracted cancer. In an interview with Pinkvilla, Namrata recalled how her father, Sunil Dutt, used to care for Nargis.

She shared, “Dad was with her every single day from morning to night. He would feed her, clean her. We sisters too would take turns in looking after her. I’m sure he cried secretly but Dad never let us know what he was going through.” For Nargis’ treatment, the Dutt family also moved to the US temporarily at one point. Sunil Dutt was always there for the actress and used to “watch her (Nargis) with binoculars (from his rented apartment),” said Namrata.

WHEN NARGIS SLIPPED INTO COMA

After getting her pancreas removed, Nargis didn’t get well but instead slipped into a coma. But, Nargis had strong willpower, which helped her to wake up from the coma. “Coma patients can’t react but they apparently register everything. So, we would read out the news to her, talk to her about what’s happening in Bombay, as though she was very much there,” Namrata said. Recalling Nargis’ strong will the day she stood with a walker after waking up from the coma, Namrata said that people at the hospital clapped for her and called her “Miracle Lady”. “It was truly a touching moment,” revealed Namrata Dutt.

PRIYA DUTT PENS AN EMOTIONAL NOTE FOR HER MOTHER

Nargis and Sunil Dutt’s youngest daughter, Priya Dutt, always remembers her parents. On her mother’s 41st death anniversary, she shared the actress’s photo on Instagram and penned a heartfelt note. “Her presence in my life and through my work is everywhere. Ma passed away on this day in 1981, I was 14 years old but she never left my side (sic),” wrote Priya.
