Justice League’s storyboard artist Jay Oliva shares concept art of Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke from the cancelled DCEU Batfleck movie.
Justice League’s storyboard artist Jay Oliva shares previously unrevealed concept art of Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke, hinting at the DCEU’s original plans for his character. Manganiello, who cameoed in the final moments of Justice League as the mercenary Slade Wilson (AKA Deathstroke), was widely expected to reprise his role both in his own solo movie and as the primary antagonist of Ben Affleck’s cancelled Batman film. Instead, Affleck would become disillusioned with the role, and his eventual departure from the project paved the way for Robert Pattinson to assume Batman’s cowl in the latest big-screen iteration of Gotham’s Dark Knight.
In the theatrical release of Justice League, Manganiello’s Deathstroke appeared briefly in a post-credit scene that teased Lex Luthor’s (Jesse Eisenberg) creation of the Injustice League. However, when Zack Snyder sought to release his original vision for the film with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, he also restored the original post-credit scene in which Luthor revealed Bruce Wayne’s secret identity, setting the scene for Deathstroke’s proper DCEU introduction. Nevertheless, plans for Manganiello’s Deathstroke seemingly collapsed with Affleck’s departure from the role and the eventual production of Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Now Oliva has stirred the flames of fans calling out for Deathstroke’s return, taking to social media to share some concept art from what appears to be Affleck’s cancelled Batman film. The art shows Manganiello’s Deathstroke brandishing his sword, and Batman’s reflection can clearly be seen reflected in the blade. It looks like the concept art comes from a pivotal action scene. This, of course, is not the first time fans have been teased with what might have been and reignited calls for the solo Batfleck movie. Earlier this year, Manganiello himself caused a stir by changing his own profile pic to that of Deathstroke just days before The Batman was due to release in cinemas. Meanwhile, legions of avid SnyderVerse fans still continue their persistent calls to restore Snyder’s original vision for the DCEU, and also to see Affleck’s own solo Batman movie be made with Manganiello as a main villain. The above concept art, while fairly simple, will likely only drum up excitement again as it conjures ideas of a potential clash between Deathstroke and Batman.
While some fans continue to have hopes that Discovery’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. may potentially lead to a DCEU course correction, Manganiello himself has even revealed that he doesn’t think it is likely he’ll ever get to play the role again, saying he “let that go a while ago.” Moreover, it is beginning to seem even more likely that the DCEU’s Batman will be played by Michael Keaton moving forward after the events of The Flash movie. Nonetheless, SnyderVerse fans will undoubtedly continue to petition for Manganiello’s return as Deathstroke as they seek to push for a continuation of Snyder’s DCEU vision in a post-Justice League world.
