Disney is in for a thrilling month of content thanks to Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars side and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from Marvel Studios, the latter only being a few days away. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Avenging sorcerer is set to take a deep dive into other universes which will throw him and other characters into the biggest MCU solo adventure to date.
With both Star Wars and Marvel existing under the Disney umbrella, there’s been the odd question or two about whether the two iconic franchises could ever cross over with one another in a meaningful way. The MCU has referenced the galaxy far, far away a couple of times, including Peter Parker’s nod to Episode V in Captain America: Civil War, but the connections end at that point.
As for the MCU’s next adventure, Doctor Strange 2 has the opportunity to travel all across different worlds and universes, which will bring in Marvel legacy characters like Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier. But now, thanks to the latest clip that debuted before the movie’s worldwide release, there may be reason to expect something never seen in MCU history.
Star Wars Meets Doctor Strange
Marvel Studios released a new 17-second clip from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showing the titular sorcerer jumping through different universes alongside America Chavez.
Through this jump, Strange and Chavez appear to go through a world filled with rocky mountains and lava flowing everywhere. Numerous fans online have begun to point out that this world looks eerily similar to the lava planet Mustafar from Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise.
Mustafar also made an appearance in 2021’s animated MCU series What If…? as Infinity Ultron fought Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher.
Both projects show the huge buildings that sit on the mountainside as the lava flows down the cliffs. Fans know this location best thanks to Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s final battle in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
The full clip can be seen below:
Mustafar’s Lava Moves to the MCU?
As was the case in What If…?, this clip of Doctor Strange traveling through the Multiverse only showed off about a second of footage from Mustafar, if that’s truly what the clip is meant to imply. Even so, seeing this iconic landmark just for a second is enough to have Marvel and Star Wars fans excited to see where things could go in this Multiversal MCU sequel.
Considering this clip is already out in the open ahead of Doctor Strange 2‘s premiere next week, a nod to Star Wars could only be the start of where Marvel Studios is going with the story and its surprises. Fans will also look to see just how much screentime a world like Mustafar gets in this new MCU outing, or if it will even play an important role in the plot of the story at all.
As Doctor Strange 2 gets closer to its debut, more massive surprises wait in the wings for Marvel Studios as the franchise looks to take some of its most daring moves in any solo movie ever. Throwing Star Wars into the mix could just be the start, particularly with just over two hours of runtime in play to tell deliver such a massive adventure.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters on May 6.
