hymn wong launches ‘both sides thinking’
‘Both Sides Thinking’ is a project of over 300+ illustrations and dozens of animated GIFs that blend philosophy with minimal design to visualize abstract concepts and ideas through plain black and white visual representations. Created by designer Hymn Wong, the pictographs literally inspire people to look at life ‘from both sides’.
reconciling the divide through yin and yang philosophy
‘Both Sides Thinking’ responds to how social media is exacerbating the divide between people with strong opinions. ‘There’s this constant battling between who’s right and who’s not,’ shares Wong (see more here). In this project, the designer used the classic black and white approach to represent that divide. But while these two color ‘extremes’ may seem to be opposing each other, they actually work like Yin and Yang; each GIF clearly illustrates how both sides need each other to form an image, a complete story.

Besides animating them, Wong also turned several of his visuals into card games. Oneis called ‘The Relation Game’, where users get to explore and discover relationships that they might not be aware of yet. The second game, ‘Q42’, tackles various life topics. Other products include the ‘Now Clock’, designed to return to the present moment, and the ‘Nowhere’ lenticular cards which change meaning depending on how users rotate them: ‘Either you are Now Here, or you are No Where‘, explains Wong.
